Huatulco was a Zapotec settlement, a crossroad between the territories of Zaachila and Tehuantepec. When the Aztecs first arrived here, they called it Cuahtolco, which means, Place of
wood worshipping.
When the Spaniards arrived in Huatulco, Hernán Cortés thought it a good place to establish a base to get to Perú or to the Orient. Between 1526 and 1560 the new coastal town developed as a trade center. In 1560 the importance of Acapulco as a port began to grow, and Huatulco became a port just for pirates. |
